Dr. Bedewy wins the Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award

Dr. Bedewy has been selected to receive the 2017 Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award from Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) for his proposed research on developing methods for controlling the growth of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes in order to tailor their properties for specific energy applications.

“When we synthesize vertically aligned carbon nanotubes, or what we call “CNT forests”, by chemical vapor deposition, billions of individual nanotubes grow simultaneously from substrate-bound catalyst nanoparticles.  Hence, controlling their interactions and population dynamics is crucial for tailoring their spatially varying properties,” said Dr. Bedewy.  “In my group (NanoProduct lab), we focuses on process development for manufacturing of engineered CNT forests by combining experiments with mathematical modeling,” Dr. Bedewy added.

According to the award website, “the Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Awards provide seed money for research by junior faculty at ORAU member institutions. These awards are intended to enrich the research and professional growth of young faculty and result in new funding opportunities.”

Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), which is a consortium of 121-member universities that has a strategic partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), “cultivates collaborative partnerships that enhance the scientific research and education enterprise of our nation.”

Dr. Bedewy joined the faculty of the Swanson School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh in Fall 2016 as an Assistant Professor of Industrial Engineering, where he established the NanoProduct Lab.
